Dear Maureen,

We're adopting a pair of sea otters (Denise and Denephew) from a rescue and we need to get the nursery organized and decorated before they arrive. The room is a bit small at 10'x12', so we need items that maximize storage, are safe, easy to clean, flexible enough to grow with them, and that flow with the rest of our house, which is a saturated maximalist neoclassical dream. What do you recommend?

Also--should we tell them they're adopted??

-Concerned in Scratch Ankle, AL

Dear Concerned,

Congratulations on your growing family! 99% of parenting is trying unsuccessfully to sit down.

And yes, you should tell them right away, and continue to casually talk about it from time to time. Let them feel whatever feelings they have without judgment. Emphasize how much they're loved and that adoption is no big deal, because sometimes mommies and daddies are eaten by sharks or sea lions and their babies are taken care of by others. It's not a dark or shameful secret--it's just one thread of the larger story of how you came to be a family.

Likewise, the nursery must begin with another undeniable truth: otters require sumptuous luxury, but the luxury must respect the philosophical kelp and damp parliament of their souls. In practical terms, that means placing two tufted, piped, and befringed olive green beds at the center of the room like twin royal barges that have hit an iceberg in the moonlight:

A high-contrast animal-print rug will assist with eye development and must be chosen with the same gravity as naming a planet. Place it (the rug, not the planet) beneath the bed and extend it into the play area, where wooden blocks, plush clams, and stuffed sardines can gather. Above that, hang a disco ball to cast glittering constellations over naptime. If the room begins to look like a ballroom inside a tide pool, proceed. This is a sign of emotional accuracy. Add dimmable lighting, blackout curtains, and a waterproof play mat tucked nearby for sushi feeding, water play, and other otter ceremonies.

Fish decor provides a narrative structure, but avoid making the room too literal. To add balance and contain the poop energy, try this litter box cleverly disguised as a monstera:

Next we have storage. Try to make the most of vertical space and use portable items that can be carried or shoved with one hand. These delights can be found in our affiliate store:

The finished room should feel safe, soft, and cheerful, as if a hospital, a boutique hotel, and a dream about shellfish received a bobsledding invitation from the Mariana Trench.

And with that, dear Concerned, I present the solution to your dilemma below. Clicking on the board will take you to our shop where you may happily purchase everything:

With the wings of Heaven on my shoes,
